In the center of Baltimore is the Washington Monument. It was the first major monument begun to honor George Washington (1732–1799). Erected in 1815 and completed in 1829. The cornerstone was laid with great ceremony on Independence Day, July 4, 1815. This monument was designed by architect Robert Mills is the 1st public monument to honor the nation’s 1st president.
